If you’ve ever travelled to Japan before and found yourself blissfully melting into a steaming hot bath, you’ll know there’s nothing quite like the ritual of an onsen. It’s warm, mineral-rich, and weirdly therapeutic in a way your cramped HDB bathroom could never replicate. Luckily, the good life isn’t limited to your last vacation. These days, it’s completely possible to enjoy an onsen in Singapore, complete with authentic water treatments, soothing aromas, and even traditional yukata experiences.

Beyond the physical benefits, onsens also carry a strong spirit of rest—something most of us could use more of. Below, we explore five of the best spots to soak, sweat, and switch off. Some are perfect for first-timers, while others offer serene private rooms ideal for couples or anyone craving a little peace.

Note: This list is strictly not in order.

It’s also thoughtful that they offer disposable underwear for guests who prefer a little modesty, making the experience more accessible, especially for women who aren’t used to nude bathhouses. After your soak, you can head to their Tatami Café for a warm Japanese meal and even rent a yukata to extend that holiday vibe.

I had a wonderful time at Joysa Onsen Cafe! The atmosphere was calm and cozy — perfect for unwinding. The onsen experience was clean, comfortable, and very refreshing. The staff were polite and attentive, making sure everything went smoothly. The cafe side was equally lovely — the drinks and desserts were beautifully presented and tasted great. It’s such a nice balance between relaxation and indulgence. Definitely worth a visit for anyone looking to de-stress and treat themselves!

I stumbled upon Joya Onsen Cafe from google maps while looking for a private onsen in Singapore and was blown away by the service and facilities of this establishment. The private onsen rooms come equipped with a shower, sauna and mini onsen pool. The rooms are well decorated and clean. Additionally each room is stocked with a bathgels, shampoos and various shower essentials. The booking I made came along with a set meal which I was very satisfied with as despite the chef being a unorthodox chef for Japanese cuisine. The food tasted vastly superior to most Singaporean Japanese establishments at similar prices points. Definitely will return to Joya Onsen Cafe and would highly recommend others to visit be it to treat yourself or celebrate a special occasion

Enjoyed my time at Ikeda spa, with the private onsen and my masseuse was thorough in pressing on my stiff points. Felt relaxed after the experience!

Thank you for the wonderful experience! I feel like really in Japan when I take a bath in Hinoki Onsen. The texture of the wood is super smooth and very soft for our human body. So I feel more relax than plastic. Fantastic. Also the massage from Sem san was quite nice. She doesn’t change the power of massage during 60min and very sincerely massage me. After massage is like a lot of circulation in my body. Thank you so much🥰

Nothing beats a close to Japan onsen experience in spore. This would be the best place and a place u can fell like being in Japan. Love the atmosphere and environment. The fees is fair and finish off with a glass of milk or cold green tea. There is steam. Sunna hot dip and food and massage

I’ve been here 3x and I have to say that it is definitely the closest and most authentic you’d get to a real onsen in Japan, and by far the best onsen in Singapore if you ever had to choose – though my own view is that it’s not really a fight. It’s also the most centrally located and accessible by public transport or if you drive. I like that they have numerous pools of differing temperatures, and an ice cold dipping pool too. There is also a yukata and slippers provided for free (you’d think it’s a given but this isn’t the case elsewhere) and plenty of toilets to use in the gender segregated areas. The changing area is comfortable and clean, and i used to think it was on the pricey side until I tried others in Singapore and realised that here, you’re paying for quality and comfort 🙂

Yingying
Good service by the staff! They are super and nice helpful. It was clean and tidy on the women’s side of the onsen. There were lots of anti slip mats but you need to still be careful when you walk. Disposable underwear and hair ties were also provided so you can use them if you need. Surprisingly, it wasn’t that crowded even though it was a sunday. There’s different types of bath e.g. cold, silk and bubble bath. Steam room is available as well. We managed to shower and dry our hair in the facility within an hour. No pictures allowed in the onsen (for good reasons) so we took photos of food at their cafe. Overall good experience!

Had a one-hour massage and a 40-minute onsen session. The place was clean and pleasant. Especially impressed with the cleanliness and feel of the onsen room. They thoughtfully provided amenities including towels, slippers, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, shower caps, combs, cotton buds, cotton pads, hair dryer and a in-room water dispenser. Hope they maintain it well down the road cos mouldy bath areas and/or unclean onsen tub certainly would spoil the entire experience. Best ending to the experience? The staff did not even try asking me to sign up for any package. This alone warrants a return trip!

Lin Eng Koh

Took the 1hr Thai traditional massage and onsen. Massage was firm and on point, onsen bath was relaxing. Facilities are clean and staff friendly. They do not try to sell your packages at the end of session, which is a plus point and makes it an overall pleasant and relaxing experience.

TheGirlCo’s Recommendation

If you can’t decide which onsen to book first, we’ve narrowed it down to the ones that genuinely stand out.

1. If you want the most Japan-like onsen experience in SG:

Our pick: Yunomori Onsen & Spa

Choose Yunomori if you want the closest thing to a real Japanese bathhouse without hopping on a plane. With multiple pools—hot, cold, jet, and the well-loved silky microbubble bath—plus saunas, steam rooms, and quiet lounges, it’s a full soak-and-reset ritual from start to finish. Girls love it for how truly authentic it feels, right down to the traditional nude format and the post-soak café that completes the experience. It’s perfect for a social soak with your bestie, or if you simply miss your last Japan trip and want to recreate that magic here.

2. If you want a private, aesthetic retreat for pure me-time:

Our pick: Joya Onsen Café

Pick Joya if you want something cosy, aesthetic, and totally stress-free. Their private onsen rooms give you your own shower, sauna, and mini onsen pool, perfect if you prefer full privacy, feel shy about communal bathing, or just want an uninterrupted self-care moment. Joya’s thoughtful touches make the experience even better, from seasonal bath infusions and disposable underwear to yukata rentals and their charming Tatami Café that recreates that “Japan holiday” feeling.

3. If you want a luxurious, spa-first experience with premium materials:

Our pick: Ikeda Spa

Go for Ikeda Spa if you want a premium, ultra-soothing escape that feels straight out of Japan. As Singapore’s first Japanese spa since 2009 and one of the most awarded onsen spas outside Japan, Ikeda is loved for its signature hinoki tubs crafted from Japan’s most prized cypress wood. Once reserved for royalty and iconic temples, real hinoki releases natural mineral oils with calming, anti-bacterial, and aromatherapeutic benefits, giving your soak that warm, woody, meditative scent you can’t fake. Paired with imported onsen salts, thoughtful Japanese rituals, and private baths that feel like your own royal retreat, it’s the perfect pick when you want something luxurious, intimate, and truly transportive.

Final Thoughts

And if you’re curious about finding more couple-focused wellness experiences, the list above is a great starting point. But if you want something even more romantic, intimate, or luxurious, check out these best couple spas in Singapore that are tailored specifically for two.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The facilities in Singapore that offer an “onsen” experience do not use naturally occurring geothermal hot spring water. Singapore does not have volcanic activity, so these establishments use heated tap water that is carefully enriched with specific minerals and salts to replicate the therapeutic properties and feel of a traditional Japanese onsen. They are considered man-made or Jinko-onsen. An exception is Sembawang Hot Spring Park, which is a natural hot spring but is a public foot-soaking area, not a commercial bathhouse.

In most traditional Japanese-style public onsens in Singapore, the strict Japanese etiquette of full nudity is observed. The bathing areas are gender-segregated. You will be provided with or should bring a small modesty towel (kakeyu towel) to cover yourself when walking between the changing area and the bath, but it must not touch the bath water. However, some facilities offer private onsen rooms where couples or families can bathe together and may permit swimwear. Always check the specific facility’s rules beforehand.

While traditional Japanese onsens have historically banned tattoos due to their association with the yakuza (Japanese mafia), onsen-style facilities in Singapore are generally more lenient.

  • Public Onsens (Gender-Segregated): Some facilities may allow smaller tattoos or ask you to cover them with waterproof patches, while others may be more accommodating.
  • Private Onsens (Couples/Families): Tattoos are almost always permitted in private rooms since the bathing is not communal.

It is highly recommended to call ahead to the specific establishment to confirm their policy if you have visible tattoos.

The main difference lies in the Japanese-style ritual and the composition of the water.

  • Onsen Experience: Focuses on the mineral-rich, hot-water soaking ritual, typically using various types of mineral baths (e.g., carbonated, silk, or mineral-salt baths). It emphasises cleanliness before entering the bath, silence, and therapeutic soaking.
  • Regular Spa/Jacuzzi: Often focuses on hydro-jet massages or a more generic warm-water soak without the specific mineral enrichment and traditional Japanese etiquette. A spa typically includes a wider range of services like body wraps, facials, and massages.

While the Singaporean onsens use manufactured mineral water, they aim to replicate the therapeutic effects of natural hot springs. Common claimed benefits include:

  • Improved Circulation: The hot water causes vasodilation, which increases blood flow.
  • Muscle and Joint Pain Relief: The heat can help relax muscles and soothe stiff joints.
  • Skin Improvement: Different minerals are claimed to have specific benefits, such as sulphur for skin conditions like eczema or carbonated water for smoother skin texture.
  • Stress Reduction: The peaceful atmosphere and warm water promote relaxation and lower stress levels.

The three most important rules are:

  1. Wash Thoroughly First: You must completely wash your body with soap and rinse off all soap residues at the provided shower area before entering the onsen pool.
  2. No Towels/Swimwear in the Water: Do not let the small modesty towel or any clothing touch the bath water. Place the towel on the side of the bath or on your head.
  3. Silence and Respect: Keep your voice down, avoid splashing, and do not dive or swim. The onsen is a place for quiet relaxation.

After soaking, it is generally advised not to immediately rinse off in a final shower. This allows the beneficial minerals to remain on your skin and continue their therapeutic effects. Simply pat yourself dry with your bath towel in the drying area after you have exited the main bathing area and before returning to the changing room.

While there’s no strict rule, it’s generally recommended to soak for shorter periods with breaks in between, especially in the hotter baths. A typical soaking session in one bath might be around 5 to 10 minutes before taking a break to cool down outside the water or move to a cooler bath. Staying too long in hot water can lead to dizziness or dehydration. The total time for an onsen experience is usually around 45 to 60 minutes of soaking time, with the full experience including preparation and relaxation lasting about three hours.

Yes, many onsen-style facilities in Singapore do allow children, often requiring a minimum age of around three years old. Children must always follow the same gender segregation rules as adults and be supervised by a parent. For private onsen rooms, the age restriction is usually less strict, but all guests count towards the room’s maximum capacity.

The cost can vary widely depending on the type of session and the facility:

  • Public (Gender-Segregated) Onsen: A day pass or all-day access typically ranges from $40 to $70.
  • Private Onsen Room: Prices vary significantly based on duration and number of people, often starting from around $80 to $120 for a private 1.5-hour session for two people.

Costs are usually higher if the session is bundled with other services like massages or meals.
