Super value for quality Japanese food. Went on Wednesday night which was ladies night, 50% off for ala cart dishes. There’s also $1 sake, comes in 6 at a time. We ordered 15 pieces sashimi, skewer plater, salmon okonomiyaki, aburi cheese sushi, 6 sake shots, sweet potato balls and additional skewers like pork belly, salmon belly etc.. Total came to less than $120. Water was free with unlimited refill.

TheFitnessTheory
Went there because they had affordable lunch menus, and absolutely LOVED the experience. The food was great; but mostly had the best time because of the service. The lady would attended my table was super attentive and kind, I felt incredibly well taken care of – even if it was only me at a the table (some places aren’t welcoming with solo patrons). Would absolutely visit again!

Alex Sua
A unique setting which feels very spacious to have a dinner there. We had a wonderful meal, the service is good and food arrives very fast. The sashimi is generously thick cut. Special thanks to Robert who serves us well.

Warm, cosy restaurant with reasonably fast service (I went on a Fri night when it’s about 80% full) and very good food. Most of the food we ordered were delicious, except maybe the Cha Soba. The texture of the soba and the dipping sauce did not hit the right spot. Pls see photo captions for more details regarding the food.

Beau
One of best Japanese Izakaya in the north area. Their sushi so tasty and the pork belly skewer. The place quite small so it’s better to reserve before going.

YC Yeo
High quality food at very reasonable prices. Service was superb! Kids left behind some materials and the waitress picked up and chased after us after we left the restaurant. Thank you! Will definitely return again!

Came here for my farewell lunch. Very nice restaurant. Food was tasty and sashimi was fresh. Not many restaurants can serve such a nice unagi.

Connie Tan
Came here twice to have a drink after dinner, service is quite good , the best part is they will readily serve cold glasses for beer. Yakitori can be grilled longer/ more charred .

Althea Chan
The ramen and gyoza here is excellent! The pork broth of the ramen soup is really thick with the onsen egg on the top. The pork meat inside the gyoza is soft and nice. I highly recommend both of the dishes! The staff were also friendly and kind, willing to serve you.

Walked in to this Izakaya early on Sat evening. Glad they had a table for 2 of us. We ordered truffle fries, 8 kinds of skewers, bara chirashi don and 2 beers. Sashimi fish was fresh and the skewered items are delicious. We had an enjoyable dining experience due to the 5-star service. We declined an offer to order more beers as we were driving. And immediately the staff asked if he could offer us hot tea instead, on the house! What a nice touch! We’ll be happy to revisit when we are back in the area. The decor transports one right into Japan.

FC
This Izakaya had such an inviting ambience, warm and friendly service. The menu was a great selection of sakes, fresh sashimi, kushimono and more. The star was the Tuesday special “Catch of the Day”, fresh fish flown in from Japan, highly recommended for fish lovers.

Sharmaine Tan

This is the sort of place you can always turn to when you’re undecided about what to eat, because there will almost certainly be something on the menu that catches your eye. Affordable prices too!

Had a fantastic experience at Shukuu Izakaya and Bar! Hotate was incredibly fresh, and pairing it with mentaiko and fish roe created an amazing burst of flavour. We ordered the hot soba which was super comforting, and the spicy salmon don had just the right amount of kick yet flavourful but not too spicy, perfect even for those who can’t take much heat. Overall, great value for the quality of food. Don’t forget to pair your meal with their sake selection! The ambience is warm and inviting, and the staff are very meticulous with their service too. Good place to chill with friends or families and have dinner after a long day at work!

Great service, good food. Oden available at 6:30 pm and sold out by 7! Reservation recommended. Loved the Tako wasabi, biggest portion we had so far, in SG or Japan!

Mark Tho
What a hidden gem! Discovered this place randomly looking for dinner. Got there at 6pm and was able to get a table walking in. Got really busy from 7pm onwards. Prices look reasonable and fair for the food quality. Fresh and tasty. Great place to have a casual catch up over drinks too. The yakitori set was reasonably priced at about $20 for 7 skewers. The baby shrimps is a must order as well – such a great snack! Salad with white bait was good too! Crab cream croquette is also a nice addition for textures – crispy outer and soft creamy inner. Unagi rice bowl was normal. All in all, I’ll be back for sure and recommend anyone around the area for a try!

AB XY
This was my first time trying Izakaya Hikari. All the Japanese food I ordered was very nice. I especially loved the tako wasabi and kani miso. I was not disappointed at all. One note: to use the toilet, you need to get a card from the store. Thank you for the good service and delicious food!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

An izakaya is a Japanese-style bar/pub that is primarily focused on drinking and socializing, with food served as small, shareable plates (like tapas) to be consumed with the drinks. It’s much more casual, often louder, and the menu is typically diverse, featuring items like grilled skewers (yakitori), fried items (karaage, tempura), and sashimi.

A traditional Japanese restaurant, conversely, usually focuses on a specific cuisine (like sushi, tempura, or fine-dining kaiseki) and offers a more formal, sit-down dining experience with larger, individual main courses.

In Singapore, while not universal, some izakayas may levy a small, mandatory seating or cover charge, often disguised as a small appetizer called otoshi or tsukidashi. This small dish is served once you are seated and is included in your bill as a standard practice inherited from Japan. It’s always best to check the menu or ask the staff if a seating charge applies.

The menu is designed for variety and sharing!

  • Food: Yakitori (grilled skewers, especially chicken thigh momo, chicken meatballs tsukune), Karaage (Japanese fried chicken), Sashimi (for a refreshing contrast), Gyoza (pan-fried dumplings), and Edamame (for a quick beer snack) are staples.
  • Drinks: Common choices are draught Japanese beer (often served nama or cold), Sake (served chilled or warm), and Highballs (whisky and soda). Many Singaporean izakayas also offer Japanese-inspired cocktails or chuhai (shochu-based mixed drinks).

Izakayas in Singapore can range from budget-friendly to high-end. Generally, a casual dinner experience including a few drinks and multiple shared plates typically falls between $40 to $70+ per person.

Lunch deals, if available, are often more affordable, sometimes starting from $15 to $20 for a set. The final price heavily depends on the amount and type of alcohol consumed and whether you order premium items like quality sashimi or Wagyu beef.

Yes, izakayas are designed for a communal and lively atmosphere, making them highly suitable for group gatherings and after-work socializing with colleagues or friends. Many locations offer communal tables or counter seating, and the shared-plate style encourages interaction.

It’s highly recommended to make a reservation for groups, especially on weekday evenings and weekends.

No, you do not have to order alcoholic drinks. While izakayas are fundamentally drinking establishments, they usually offer a range of non-alcoholic options, such as soft drinks, juices, and Japanese teas (like iced Oolong tea or green tea). However, be aware that you will still likely be charged the mandatory otoshi seating fee, if one is in place.

Unlike a quiet, formal Japanese restaurant, izakayas generally have a lively, bustling, and sometimes loud atmosphere.

The setting is intentionally casual, often with warm lighting, wood accents, and a constant hum of conversation and laughter.

It’s the perfect place to relax, unwind, and be a bit boisterous without worrying about being too disruptive.

This is a common question, as both involve skewers! Yakitori literally means “grilled chicken” and strictly refers to skewers made only with chicken parts (thigh, skin, heart, etc.).

Kushiyaki is the broader, general term that means “skewered and grilled,” and it includes skewers made from all other ingredients, such as pork, beef, seafood, and vegetables. At most izakayas, you will find a dedicated section for both on the menu.

These Japanese terms refer to all-you-can-drink and all-you-can-eat promotions, respectively. Nomihodai (all-you-can-drink) is a popular offering at izakayas, often for a set period (e.g., 90 or 120 minutes) and a fixed price, allowing patrons to enjoy unlimited drinks from a select menu.

Tabehodai (all-you-can-eat) is less common but can sometimes be found, especially at chain-style or buffet izakayas. These packages offer great value if you plan to consume a lot of drinks or food.

While the focus is on small, shared plates, most izakayas in Singapore do offer a selection of heavier items to finish the meal, such as grilled rice balls (yaki onigiri), rice bowls (donburi), or simple noodle dishes (like ramen or udon). These are traditionally ordered at the end of the evening to satisfy the appetite after drinking, rather than at the start.
