I had a great time of learning at the Basic Communication Japanese Course for Beginners with Japanese Explorer under Jeryl sensei. Jeryl not only teaches theoretical concepts but is also able to throw in nuggets of real life experiences and examples, having lived in Japan for many years. He is not only patient but also very humorous which makes the lesson fun. Also, his lessons are easy to follow and he goes through the accompanying book thoroughly to ensure we cover all that is being taught. On top of that, he gives us exercises to do as homework to allow us to further our learning throughout the week. Additionally, there is the option to to attend the lesson online and it is also reccorded so that we can rewatch at a later time if needed. Definitely reccomend!

Pretty good place to pick up Japanese. Lesson is well paced and Hatano Sensei is really enthusiastic. Will recommend because of the small class size, ample speaking opportunities and recap quizzes which reinforces what we learn weekly.

Honestly a great place to start learning Japanese. I’ve never met a single bad teacher in Ikoma, all of them are so fun, friendly and encouraging in their own ways. They also allow you to switch to another class for a week if your schedule doesn’t align with your usual class, else they also provide 30 mins of makeup lesson before the next class, which is a really nice touch to help with your learning.

I am an existing student at Tsubasa for close to three years now and I would like to share my experience and hope that this review can serve as a helpful resource for prospective students. I have previously studied at 2 other different language centers with native Japanese teachers but I always found myself not being able to progress as much as I would like to. Being good at Japanese does not equate to being good at teaching Japanese. However, Can-sensei is both an experienced and qualified teacher. Having studied the linguistics of Japanese abroad in Japan and also being a first-time learner of the language many years ago, he was able to understand the difficulties that students might faced and provide tailored advice. In this regard, I was able to progress further than where I had previously stopped. I would highly recommend Tsubasa to other students not only interested in learning the language, but also the culture, psychology of the Japanese people and the various social issues faced in Japan.

I have been studying with Can sensei for the past 6 months and overall, it has been an enriching experience. Through his lessons, I have started to think more about the subtleties of the Japanese language and be more deliberate with my word and grammar choices. Even though I studied for 4 years under a Japanese teacher for my O levels, these subtle nuances were never taught. I also like the emphasis on the cultural aspect of learning Japanese. Learning a new language means exploring how the native speakers view and experience the world so it was very helpful and interesting to have Can sensei introduce these in class. Lastly, I also like the time we get to practise conversation in class. This has always been the toughest part of learning Japanese for me even back in school. So having this time to do so in class is very helpful.

First started learning the language back in NUS and the Japanese language tutor I missed the most back in NUS was not any of native teachers but a Singaporean one. Despite that, after graduation, I went on to 2 Japanese language centres here to continue my learning and didn’t have a good experience such as in NUS. As such, when I got to know about Can sensei and Tsubasa Language Services, decided to sign up under them. I have been learning under Can sensei for almost 2 years now. His explanation is easy to understand, and he gives many tips and tricks for us to remember especially for grammar. He also regularly send his students mind-maps etc to aid us in our revision. As he is not a native, it’s easier to ask questions and clarify concepts compared to asking a native Japanese (which I’ve experienced before). If you would like learn Japanese language, I would definitely recommend Tsubasa Language Services!

I attended Japanese Elementary classes starting from E1 in 2023 with no background of the language at all. My teacher, Jack Sensei, has been very patient and he’s very clear in his teaching. When certain concept is more difficult, Jack Sensei would try his best to explain and make it easier for the class to understand. He would also put extra emphasis on important points which helped the class to remember. I have learnt a lot from him and I believe I have a reasonably good foundation of Elementary level now. There are homework assigned to practise and reinforce learning, and quizzes to assess learning. Something that I really appreciate and thankful for is his summary at the end of each lesson and recap at the start of each lesson; which are really useful.

There were quizzes at the start of each lesson which made it mandatory for me the revise and read up every week.
