Since time immemorial, people have been learning another language not only because they want to be able to speak another language but also to learn of other cultures, traditions, and ways of living. Nowadays, learning a language other than English is not only beneficial but also necessary for success. This is because being able to speak a foreign tongue, like Japanese, can open up more opportunities for you.
The continuous globalization and modernization bring different cultures and communities together. Speaking another language apart from your mother tongue allows you to break barriers, especially when you’re immersed in another culture. In a corporate setting, for example, you can be promoted to a much better position if you speak a foreign language that will allow you to blend easily in a new work environment. For private persons, you can travel to a particular country and be able to communicate well with locals if you speak their language.
These are just some of the many benefits of learning to speak Japanese or other languages. Here are four of the best schools where you can learn Japanese in Singapore.

We learnt how to say basic things like thank you and you’re welcome. I’ve really enjoyed learning as it was both easy to follow and understand.
For a bite-sized learning module, this is fun and interesting. It was easy to learn, and we can always refer to past sessions for a recap. A good mobile e-learning tool.

3. PYAESS Japanese Language School
PYAESS Japanese Language School was founded in 1988 by Mr. Seiichi Haga who came to Singapore for the first time in 1975 in a ship named “Ship for South East Asia Youth Programme” or SSEAYP. He returned to the country in 1985 and opened a Japanese school and registered with the Ministry of Education in 1988. He named the school “PYAESS”, which is the name of the ship he boarded spelled backward. After 30 years, Mr. Haga and his team of dedicated and qualified Japanese teachers continue to teach Japanese lessons in English.
PYAESS Japanese Language School is one of the best institutions where you can learn Japanese. They offer Japanese courses to young students, conversational Japanese for non-beginners, in-house training, private tuition, intensive and school holiday courses, as well as teachers’ training course.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you and all the teachers and staff at the Pyaess Japanese Language School.
A few years ago I visited the beautiful Hokkaido during the winter season and it was a wonderful experience. The only regret was I couldn’t speak Japanese at that time. So, I started looking for a Japanese school that has a flexible system, conveniently located, and would fit into my work life. I am really happy to have found Pyaess.
For the past 3 years at Pyaess, I have successfully passed JLPT Level 3, Level 2, and Level N2. I am looking forward to passing N1 one day.
Ms. Josephine Lee
I’ve attended many Japanese schools in Singapore before trying the class here at Pyaess. I used to think that learning Japanese is difficult and was stressed out studying for JLPT, but not anymore 🙂
I’ve never had a more fun and enjoyable Japanese language learning experience than at Pyaess. My lesson lasts from 10:15 am to 1:30pm on a weekend, but it doesn’t feel long at all. At half-time, the teachers switch over — you have one teacher for grammar and another for conversation — it’s a fantastic system, you never feel bored in class and get to hear how different native Japanese speak.
Thanks to this special “two-teacher method” of teaching, the teachers are always energised. They don’t talk to you like you are a kindergarten kid, but as an adult (finally!), yet somehow, you are able to understand them and learn to speak at the normal speed too! They are very professional and explain everything very well.
Even at intermediate/advanced level, the textbooks are easy to comprehend and helps you to quickly remember the vocabulary — instead of long lists of words, the vocab lists are manageable and are incorporated into the grammar explanation so you remember the words naturally with minimal revision.
The effectiveness of the methodology at Pyaess is apparent. The rest of my classmates who have been at Pyaess longer all speak fluently, I’m so impressed!
The class size are small. There are less than nine people in my class, I feel relaxed and unafraid to make mistakes. Even if you make mistake, the teacher will make sure you understand what is going on, they are very observant, caring and clever about helping us overcome our individual obstacles.
Now, instead of thinking that learning Japanese is stressful, I look forward to class every week. It’s a wonderful feeling to have found such a school at last.

4. The Japanese Cultural Society
The Japanese Cultural Society is also one of the best institutions to learn the Japanese language. They were founded in 1963 and was approved by the Registrar of Societies in August 1964. Later on, they were published in the Government Gazette as a non-profit organization. In March 1966, the cultural society formed a study committee and started the Japanese language course, starting with 3 classes under the assistance of the Japan Embassy. Ever since a Japanese language specialist from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was sent to The Japanese Cultural Society, the institution has grown from strength to strength.
The Japanese Cultural Society offers conversation courses, elementary courses, regular courses, exam preparatory courses, and intensive courses. They are the only local social organization that activity promotes cultural activities that allow you to immerse in the language and culture.
Intake only available twice a year if I am not wrong. All information can be found in their website. Every week I am looking forward attending my Japanese language lesson. Beside my keen interest to learn Japanese language, my classmates and Teacher make me want to learn more. Lots of fun during each lesson. I am lucky to have them as my companion in my learning journey.
Good place to learn Japanese. Teachers are native Japanese speakers and everyone is friendly. Other then studies, there are many other fun activities to take part in like shows, workshop and even Matsuri.
